Chronic pain is defined as persistent pain lasting longer than 3 months. That is, pain exceeding the normal time that tissue should take to heal. Chronic pain is complex and considered to be multifactorial as an individual’s pain experience is influenced by biological factors such as genetics and underlying medical conditions as well as psychological factors including stress, anxiety and depression. Furthermore, social factors such as social support, cultural beliefs and socioeconomic status can impact how individual’s experience and manage chronic pain.
